Forex Trading

Definition

Trading currency pairs (e.g., EUR/USD, GBP/JPY) on the foreign exchange market - the largest financial market by volume.

How It Works

Forex (FX) is the most common market offered by prop firms. It involves trading currency pairs, where you profit from exchange rate movements.

The forex market is open 24/5 (Sunday evening to Friday afternoon EST), offers high liquidity, and supports leverage up to 1:100 or more on prop accounts. Most forex prop firms use MetaTrader 4/5 or cTrader platforms.

Major pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY) have the tightest spreads and highest liquidity. Forex accounts typically have more prop firm options than other asset classes.

How many prop firms offer forex trading?

133 of the 213 firms in our database are categorized as CFD/Forex firms - the asset class that covers currency pairs alongside metals, indices, and other CFDs. That is by far the largest single category we track, ahead of futures-only firms (57), crypto-only firms (19), and stocks-only firms (4).

Platform support tells a similar story. Across all 213 firms, MT5 is the most widely supported platform (77 firms), followed by Match-Trader (55), cTrader (49), DXTrade (29), and the older MT4 (13, and shrinking as firms migrate to MT5). Futures-focused platforms like NinjaTrader and Rithmic barely register on the forex side, since they serve a different asset class entirely.

What rules should a forex trader check before choosing a firm?

Firm Platforms supported
FTMOcTrader, MT5, MT4
FundedNextcTrader, Match-Trader, MT5, MT4 (plus TradingView, NinjaTrader and Tradovate for its futures line-up)
Key insight: Among the 213 firms with a published trading-rules policy on our site, EA/automation is the most commonly allowed strategy on CFD accounts (66 of 89 firms with a stated policy allow it), scalping is allowed at 29 of 47, and hedging at 31 of 67 - none of the three is a given, so check each firm own rulebook rather than assuming.
