1-Step vs 2-Step vs 3-Step Prop Firm Evaluations: 542 Challenges Compared

April 7, 2026 · 9 min read · By Admin

Every prop firm trader faces the same fork in the road: do you choose a 1-step evaluation and try to get funded fast, or a 2-step (or even 3-step) evaluation with more lenient rules? The answer isn't as simple as "fewer steps = better."

We pulled data from all 542 active challenges across 51 prop firms on PropFirmMap to give you a definitive, numbers-based comparison. No opinions — just what the data says about pricing, profit splits, drawdown rules, and which evaluation type actually gives you the best shot at getting funded.

The Landscape: How Many Firms Offer Each Type?

Here's what the prop firm market looks like right now:

Evaluation TypeChallengesFirms OfferingMarket Share
1-Step29139 firms54% of all challenges
2-Step20024 firms37% of all challenges
3-Step5110 firms9% of all challenges

The 1-step evaluation dominates. Nearly 4 in 5 firms (39 out of 51) now offer a single-phase evaluation, up significantly from just two years ago when 2-step was the industry standard. This shift reflects trader demand — people want to get funded faster — and competition among firms to offer the shortest path to a funded account.

But more options doesn't mean better value. Let's break down each type.

Price Comparison: $100K Account Challenges

To make the comparison fair, we looked at the $100K account size — the most popular tier — across all three evaluation types. Here are the cheapest options at each level:

The Real Surprise: 1-Step Isn't Always Cheaper

At first glance, 1-step evaluations look dramatically cheaper. Apex Trader Funding's $27.40 headline price is hard to beat. But there's a catch many traders overlook: activation fees.

Most of the cheapest 1-step evaluations are futures firms that charge a separate activation fee once you pass the evaluation — typically $80 to $220. When you factor in activation fees, the "true cost to funded" picture shifts significantly:

Metric1-Step2-Step3-Step
Cheapest challenge fee$27.40 (Apex)$199 (Funding Kingdom)$90.25 (The5ers)
Cheapest true cost$90 (MyFundedFutures)$199 (Funding Kingdom)$273.42 (Blue Guardian)
Median true cost ($100K)~$150~$390~$295

Key insight: If you want the absolute lowest total cost with zero hidden fees, MyFundedFutures at $90 (1-step, no activation fee) or The Funding Kingdom at $199 (2-step, no activation fee) are your best bets. Use our challenge cost calculator to compare pricing across all firms.

Profit Split Comparison

The profit split — how much of your trading profits you keep — varies meaningfully by evaluation type:

Profit Split Range1-Step Firms2-Step Firms3-Step Firms
100% split availableTopstep, Phoenix Trader, Apex, Elite Trader, TickTick Trader, BulenoxThe5ers (via 3-step)The5ers, Fintokei

80% splitTopstep (base), Traders Launch, Earn2TradeAlpha Capital, BrightFunded, Maven, Funded Trading PlusE8 Markets, Lark Funding, Funding Pips

Winner: 1-Step. Six 1-step firms offer a 100% profit split on at least some portion of your earnings. Only The5ers and Fintokei match this in multi-step evaluations, and both require completing additional phases to reach 100%.

However, the 100% split at 1-step firms typically has a cap (e.g., "100% until $25,000 withdrawn, then 90%"), while 2-step firms like Alpha Capital Group offer a more consistent 80% from day one with no caps. For long-term, high-volume traders, a consistent 80-90% split may yield more total profit than a capped 100%.

Speed to Funded: How Long Each Path Takes

The number of steps directly affects how quickly you can start trading a funded account:

Evaluation TypeMinimum Time to FundedTypical Time to FundedAttempts Before Success
1-StepAs fast as 1 day5-15 trading daysVaries by trader
2-Step2 days (1 per phase)15-30 trading daysPhase 2 pass rate ~60-70%
3-Step3 days (1 per phase)20-45 trading daysPhase 3 adds another filter

Winner: 1-Step by a mile. Some traders pass a 1-step evaluation in a single day. With 2-step or 3-step evaluations, even a skilled trader needs a minimum of 2-3 trading days plus processing time between phases. If your strategy can consistently hit profit targets, 1-step gets you trading real capital weeks sooner.

But speed has a downside: 1-step evaluations often have tighter profit targets (8-10% in one phase vs. 5-8% split across two phases). A higher single-phase target means more pressure, which can lead to overtrading.

Drawdown Rules: Where 2-Step and 3-Step Fight Back

This is where multi-step evaluations earn their keep. Drawdown rules — the maximum amount you can lose before the firm closes your account — tend to be more forgiving in 2-step and 3-step programs:

  • 1-Step firms often use trailing drawdown (your max loss floor rises as your account peaks), which is harder to manage. Many futures-focused 1-step firms also have end-of-day (EOD) trailing drawdown.
  • 2-Step firms more commonly use balance-based or static drawdown, meaning your loss limit is fixed from your starting balance. This is significantly easier to manage, especially for swing traders.
  • 3-Step firms typically mirror 2-step drawdown rules but may add phase-specific minimum trading day requirements.

For example, Alpha Capital Group (2-step) uses a 4% static drawdown — your max loss is always 4% of your starting balance, period. Compare that to Apex Trader Funding (1-step), where the trailing drawdown moves with your account equity and can catch aggressive traders off-guard.

Winner: 2-Step. Static and balance-based drawdowns give you a clear, fixed risk boundary. If you've ever been stopped out of a profitable position because trailing drawdown caught up to you, a 2-step evaluation with static drawdown may be worth the extra phase. Payout Speed Comparison

Once you're funded and profitable, how quickly can you withdraw?

Payout Speed1-Step Firms2-Step Firms3-Step Firms

Bi-Weekly (14 days)Alpha Futures, Phoenix TraderAlpha Capital, Quant Tekel, Fintokei, FundedNextQuant Tekel, Fintokei, E8 Markets

Winner: 1-Step. Five 1-step firms offer daily payouts or faster. The fastest 2-step and 3-step firms typically process payouts weekly at best. If cash flow matters to you, 1-step firms — especially futures-focused ones — have a significant advantage.

Asset Class Matters More Than You Think

There's a hidden variable in the 1-step vs 2-step debate: asset class. Almost all of the cheapest 1-step evaluations are from futures firms, while most 2-step and 3-step evaluations are from forex/CFD firms.

Evaluation TypeFutures FirmsForex/CFD Firms
1-StepApex, Topstep, Elite, MyFundedFutures, TradeDay, Bulenox, Traders Launch, TickTick, BluSky, Alpha Futures, Funded Futures NetworkFTMO, FXIFY, FundedNext, The5ers, and others
2-Step-Alpha Capital, Blue Guardian, Quant Tekel, FundedNext, BrightFunded, Maven, Funding Pips, E8 Markets, and others
3-Step-The5ers, Blue Guardian, Quant Tekel, E8 Markets, Aqua Funded, and others

This means if you're a forex trader, your 1-step options are more limited (and often more expensive) than a futures trader's. Conversely, if you trade futures, you have a wealth of cheap 1-step evaluations to choose from, while 2-step and 3-step options are virtually nonexistent in the futures space.

Which Should You Choose? A Decision Framework

After analyzing all 542 challenges, here's our recommendation based on trading style:

Choose 1-Step If:

  • You trade futures (best selection, cheapest prices)
  • You want to get funded fast — potentially within days
  • You prioritize cash flow (daily/weekly payouts)
  • You're comfortable with trailing drawdown rules
  • You want the highest possible profit split (100% available at multiple firms)
  • Best picks: MyFundedFutures ($90, no activation fee, 90% split, 4.5 TP) or Topstep ($99, 100% split, 4.6 TP)

Choose 2-Step If:

  • You trade forex or CFDs (much wider selection in 2-step)
  • You prefer static/balance-based drawdown — easier risk management
  • You want lower profit targets per phase (less pressure per step)
  • You're a swing trader who needs drawdown room for overnight holds
  • Best picks: Alpha Capital Group ($397.60, 80% split, 4% static DD, 4.7 TP) or FundedNext ($379.05, 80% split, 4.5 TP)

Choose 3-Step If:

  • You want the absolute most lenient rules — lower targets, more time
  • You're a newer trader who benefits from a structured progression
  • You prioritize trust and track record — The5ers (4.9 TP) is among the most reputable firms in the industry
  • Best pick: The5ers ($90.25, up to 100% split, 4.9 TP — one of the most trusted firms in prop trading)

The Bottom Line: What the Numbers Say

Best for forex traders2-StepWidest selection of reputable forex/CFD firms
Most trusted firmsTieHigh TP scores across all types (The5ers 4.9, TickTick 4.7, Alpha Capital 4.7)

The 1-step evaluation wins on five out of nine categories. But "winning" doesn't mean it's right for everyone. If you trade forex, if you need static drawdown, or if you prefer splitting your profit target across multiple phases, a 2-step or 3-step evaluation may produce better long-term results.

The best evaluation type is the one that matches your trading style, not the one with the lowest headline price.
